WHAT IS THE CHILD DISABILITY BENEFIT?

The Child Disability Benefit (CDB) is a tax-free benefit of up to $2,886 per year ($240.50 per month) for families who care for a child under age 18 with a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions. It is paid monthly to individuals who are eligible for the Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB), and also as a supplement to the Children's Special Allowances. Families that are eligible for the CCTB for a child will receive the Child Disability Benefit only if the child is also eligible for the disability amount, or Disability Tax Credit. The CDB is retroactive to a maximum of 10 years and in some cases can result in a refund in excess of $25,000!

In order to be eligible, a child must have a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions that has lasted at least 12 months, and the impairment makes it difficult to perform a normal activity of everyday life.
